GLASS KNOWLEDGE:
Float Glass:
Float glass is a sheet of glass made by floating molten glass on a bed of molten tin. This method gives the sheet uniform thickness and very flat surfaces. Most windows in a home or business are made of float glass. It's also used in many other applications such as tabletop glass, computer/television screens, automotive and variety of others.
Float Glass can have many different properties, depending on the application. However, regardless of the end result, all float glass is essentially made the same way. It also comes in a variety of thickness from 1/16 to 1" or more.
Also, many different colors are available such as green, blue, bronze, gray with many types of reflective coatings.
Laminated Glass:
Laminated glass is a type of safety glass that holds together when broken. In the event of breaking, it is held in place by an interlayer, typically of Polyvinyl Butyral, between its two or more layers of glass. The inter layer keeps the layers of glass bonded even when broken, and its high strength prevents the glass from breaking up into large sharp pieces. This produces a characteristic spider web cracking pattern when the impact is not enough to completely pierce the glass.
Laminated glass is normally used when there is a possibility of human impact or where the glass could fall if shattered. Skylight glazing and automobile windshields typically use laminated glass. In geographical areas requiring hurricane-resistant construction, laminated glass is often used in exterior storefronts, curtain walls and windows. The PVB interlayer also gives the glass a much higher sound insulation rating, due to the damping effect, and also blocks 99% of transmitted UV light.
Tempered Glass:
Tempered glass is glass that has been processed by controlled thermal or chemical treatments to increase its strength compared with normal glass. Tempered glass is strong, has enhanced thermal resistance, and breaks into small fragments rather than shards
The greater contraction of the inner layer during manufacturing induces compressive stresses in the surface of the glass balanced by tensile stresses in the body of the glass. It is this compressive stress that gives the toughened glass increase strength. This is because any surface flaws tend to be pressed closed by the retained compressive forces, while the core layer remains relatively free of the defects which could cause a crack to begin. However, the tempered glass surface is not as hard as annealed glass and is slightly more susceptible to scratching. To prevent this, toughened glass manufacturers apply various coatings and/or laminates to the surface of the glass.
Tempered glass is used when strength, thermal resistance and safety are important considerations. The most commonly encountered tempered glass is that used for side and rear windows in automobiles, used for its characteristic of shattering into small cubes rather than large shards. Tempered glass is also used in buildings for unframed assemblies (such as frame less doors), structurally-loaded applications, and any other application that would become dangerous in the event of human impact.
Tabletop Glass:
Tabletop glass is exactly that. If you have a desk that you would like to protect the finish on or have a broken piece of glass you need replaced, we can help with that. We offer a variety of different colors and edgework options so you can achieve the exact look that you want. You can call in your order or we can meet you at your location and show you the different options available.
We also offer a custom mirror service.
We can cut mirrors to any size to meet your needs. Whether its a simple bathroom mirror, an exotic shape, or an entire wall of mirrors for a gym, we can help. Our standard mirror channel comes in two colors, silver and dark bronze) similar to oil rubbed bronze), or we have mirror clips available if mirror channel doesnt satisfy your taste.
Our standard ground edge is typically used for edge work, but if you are looking for a beveled mirror we can also help you out with that. Lead-time is slightly longer however due to outsourcing.
